Dunhill Wallet Uses Biometrics to Protect Your Cash
Do you like this story?
It's a catch-22: Dunhill's wallet is designed to keep one's cash safe using the latest technology to thwart would-be muggers and pickpockets. However, after you've shelled out $825 for said wallet, you'll find that there's little money left in it worth protecting.
That's right. $825.
What you get for your investment, however, is a "virtually indestructible" wallet, as reads Dunhill's site. But more importantly, the wallet also comes with biometric security features built into its carbon fiber casing. You need to press a finger against a reader on the wallet in order for it to actually open—similar to the biometric readers found on a variety of consumer laptops. If the wallet can't verify that it's you trying to extract that $5 bill from its confines, it doesn't open. Simple, eh?
But that's not all. The wallet also comes with a Bluetooth sensor as well, which links directly to your Bluetooth-friendly mobile device. Similar to a hands-free ignition system for one's car, the wallet is able to sense when it's more than five meters away from your phone—in theory, the two would be close together in one's pants or purse, but not quite so much if, say, the wallet is being carried away by an unsavory attacker.
Unlike before, however, the wallet's ability to open isn't dependent on its distance from you, merely a fingerprint. In this case, should the wallet's distance exceed five meters from your phone, an alarm is supposed to automatically sound on your mobile device to alert you that your wallet is presumably missing. While that's going to be a real pain for anyone who keeps his or her phone in another room from his or her pants, it's a unique security feature that just can't be matched by wallets of the conventional, non-Bluetooth variety—otherwise known as 99 percent of the rest of market.
You can't purchase the wallet in stores at the moment—only Dunhill's "personal shopper" service can be used to find said product and ship it to you free of charge.
